Prevention of Traveler's Diarrhea

Precautions when preparing and consuming food

  • Only drink water if you are sure of the purity of the supply. This also applies to ice-cubes in drinks and water for brushing teeth.
  • Safe beverages include: bottled drinks (e.g Coke, Fanta), beer, wine, hot coffee or tea or boiled water.
  • Take care with local cheeses and ice-cream. Boil unpasteurized milk before use.
  • Only eat thoroughly cooked meat that is still hot.
  • Fish and shellfish may be hazardous even if well cooked.
  • Eat only cooked vegetables and avoid salads.
  • Peel and wash all fruit.
  • Wash all dishes and cutlery in hot clean water.
  • Wash hands thoroughly before eating or handling food.
  • The risk of contracting infectious causes of diarrhea increases when food is eaten from street vendors and restaurants.
